Diplomatic preparations for the UN Secretary-General's visit to Cyprus

Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Holguin, is conducting diplomatic visits to Brussels and Ankara to prepare for Antonio Guterres' upcoming trip to Cyprus, scheduled for July 27-29. On Wednesday at 14:00 local time, Holguin is meeting with Raffaele Fitto, the European Commission Executive Vice-President and recently appointed EU Special Representative for Cyprus. Additionally, Holguin is expected to travel to Ankara on July 26 to meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. These consultations aim to discuss diplomatic developments and the potential for reviving negotiations, including the possibility of a new informal five-party meeting. During his visit to the island, Guterres plans to hold separate meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, followed by a joint meeting. The Secretary-General will also engage with civil society representatives and technical committees to assess the cooperation between the two communities. While some sources suggest the objective is to secure an agreement for a 5+1 meeting, the diplomatic outcomes remain subject to the discussions in Ankara and Brussels.
