Maria Angela Holguin prepares for UN Secretary-General visit to Cyprus

UN Secretary-General personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin is conducting diplomatic preparations ahead of Antonio Guterres' upcoming visit to Cyprus, scheduled for July 27-29. On Wednesday, Holguin is set to meet with Raffaele Fitto, the European Commission Executive Vice-President and recently appointed EU Special Representative for Cyprus, in Brussels. Additionally, Holguin is expected to travel to Ankara on July 26 to meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The primary goal of these meetings is to discuss the current diplomatic landscape of the Cyprus issue and the agenda for Guterres' visit. During his time in Cyprus, Guterres plans to hold separate meetings with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish-Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, followed by a joint session. He will also engage with representatives from bicommunal technical committees and civil society organizations. These efforts aim to evaluate the progress of inter-communal cooperation and explore prospects for restarting formal negotiations. This visit marks Guterres' final trip to Cyprus before the conclusion of his term as Secretary-General.
