Heavy rains and flooding cause fatalities across northern and northeastern India

Heavy monsoon rains have triggered flooding and landslides across several regions of India, resulting in a varying number of reported fatalities. Authorities in Assam report that 26 people have died this week due to rising water levels in the Brahmaputra River, which has exceeded danger thresholds. Separately, officials in the Jammu and Kashmir region confirm multiple deaths in the districts of Poonch, Rajouri, and Doda, while the Jammu-Srinagar highway remains closed to traffic. In the state of Nagaland, landslides have claimed at least nine lives. Meanwhile, weather officials warn that active monsoon conditions are expected to persist across northwestern, eastern, and northeastern India for the next 6-7 days. Reports from nearby Nepal indicate an additional 27 deaths since mid-June due to similar weather-related incidents. Rescue operations are ongoing in affected areas as authorities assess the damage to infrastructure, including buildings swept away in the Budgam district.
