Report on childhood cancer rates in Cyprus for 2022

The EU Country Cancer Profile 2025 report, produced by the OECD and the European Commission, highlights childhood cancer data in Cyprus. For 2022, there were an estimated 22 cases among children under 14 years old, representing 15 cases per 100,000 children. This figure is approximately 10% higher than the European Union average of 13.7 cases per 100,000. Authors noted that these are estimated projections based on the National Cancer Registry rather than finalized statistics. Leukemia remains the most prevalent condition at 36%, followed by central nervous system tumors at 27% and lymphomas at 19%. The mortality rate was also slightly elevated at 2.3 per 100,000 compared to the EU average of 2.1. Historical data from 1998–2017 confirms that Cyprus consistently reports high childhood cancer incidence. While no statistically significant rise was observed for most cancer types, thyroid cancer, particularly among girls aged 15–19, showed a marked increase.
