Cyprus competes at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

The 23rd Commonwealth Games officially commenced on July 23, 2026, in Glasgow, featuring over 3,000 athletes from 74 nations. The Cypriot delegation consists of 36 athletes—23 men and 13 women—who are set to compete in athletics, artistic gymnastics, judo, swimming, weightlifting, and para-weightlifting. High jumper Elena Kulichenko served as the flag bearer at the opening ceremony at the Arena Hydro, while para-weightlifter Maria Markou carried the baton.

Cyprus, which has participated in the games since 1978 and holds 64 all-time medals, aims to secure further distinctions. Notable athletes include Marios Georgiou, a decorated gymnast with seven previous Commonwealth medals. Ahead of the events, Cyprus also participated in the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministerial Conference, where officials proposed the creation of a Centre of Excellence for the Economic Dimension of Sport to focus on investment and athlete welfare.

Competition begins on July 24, with Cypriot gymnasts, swimmers, and para-weightlifters leading the country's efforts. The games are scheduled to continue through August 2, with ongoing events taking place at various venues, including the Tollcross International Swimming Centre for aquatic competitions.
