Recent power outages across Cyprus due to technical faults and high demand

Cyprus has experienced multiple temporary power outages recently due to various technical faults across the electricity network and generation plants. On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, a failure at the Dhekelia power station resulted in the loss of 51 megawatts at 6:50 am, affecting multiple regions. Electricity consumption in recent days has been near record levels, with demand reaching 1,286 megawatts on Monday night, closely approaching the record of 1,294 megawatts set on July 22, 2024. Officials report that while the grid is under pressure due to high temperatures and the reliance on aging infrastructure, these faults are currently considered unrelated. Scheduled network maintenance also contributed to localized outages in Nicosia, Larnaca, and Paphos. By July 22, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator noted that additional units at Vassiliko and Dhekelia were offline, leaving the system operating at its limits. While the Electricity Authority of Cyprus maintains backup capacity, further malfunctions could lead to additional load shedding.
