Greece faces heatwave with temperatures reaching 42 degrees Celsius

Greece is experiencing a severe heatwave with temperatures locally exceeding 41°C and forecast to reach 42°C in areas including Thessaly, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Attica, Boeotia, Phthiotis, Argolis, and Corinth. The extreme conditions began on Sunday and are expected to persist until Wednesday. Meteorologists indicate that relief will arrive in the west and north due to northwesterly winds, while eastern regions will remain affected by hot and dry air masses. A significant temperature drop to 32–34°C is anticipated by Thursday, with potential rain and storms predicted for the weekend. The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has placed emergency services on heightened alert due to the high risk of wildfires. The Hellenic Red Cross and the Ministry of Health have issued advisories urging citizens, especially vulnerable populations and outdoor workers, to stay hydrated and avoid sun exposure. Municipalities have opened air-conditioned public spaces to assist residents during this period.
