Colombia's president-elect reports alleged assassination plot

The security team of Colombia's president-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella, reported on Monday that it has received intelligence regarding an alleged criminal plot to assassinate him. The 47-year-old businessman and lawyer, who is scheduled to be inaugurated on August 7, has been targeted by what authorities claim are members of the National Liberation Army (ELN) and FARC dissidents. According to the security team, these groups are offering a bounty of nearly one million dollars for an attack on the incoming head of state. Intelligence reports suggest potential infiltrations at press conferences and public events. De la Espriella, who represents the right-wing, has promised a hard-line approach toward illegal armed groups, contrasting with the current policies of outgoing president Gustavo Petro. Despite the threat, the president-elect has stated he will continue his scheduled activities while calling on the authorities to investigate the source of the intimidation.
