United States announces 50% tariffs on Canadian imports

President Donald Trump has announced 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, set to take effect in 30 days. The move, based on Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act, targets goods including automobiles, alcohol, dairy products, and various consumer items. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated the action is a response to Canada's alleged discriminatory trade practices against U.S. sectors. Conversely, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the tariffs as a violation of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). Carney noted that Canada has offered comprehensive proposals to resolve these disputes and expressed willingness to continue negotiations. The tariffs affect about 5.2% of the $382 billion in goods imported from Canada in 2025. Both sides maintain conflicting views on whether these measures are justified or represent a breach of trade agreements.
