Cypriot writers honor Andreas Mouzakis in Zakynthos

On July 19, 2026, three Cypriot writers—Kyriaki Drakou, Evita Konstantinou, and former Cyprus Writers Union President Eleftherios Ploutarchou—held a memorial service for Colonel Andreas Mouzakis. The event took place at the site of his bust in Ano Gerakari, Zakynthos, following a Trisagion prayer. The initiative was organized by the Dionysios Romas Cultural Foundation in collaboration with the writers, who were in Zakynthos for the 10th World Competition of the Foundation. The awards were part of a four-day cultural event held between July 15 and July 19, 2026. Andreas Mouzakis, born on February 1, 1928, in Ano Gerakari, served in the Greek Infantry. He was killed during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on July 20, 1974, in Famagusta. Historical accounts presented at the event claim he led a defensive battle in Famagusta against Turkish forces despite orders to retreat. He is widely recognized as one of the first officers to fall during the 1974 conflict.
