Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo reaches critical levels

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reached record growth levels since being declared on May 15. As of July 19, health authorities confirmed 2,423 cases and 967 deaths, with 734 patients in care and 469 recoveries. The virus, identified as Bundibugyo ebolavirus, has spread across five provinces, including Ituri, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo, affecting 47 health zones. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 80 percent of new infections originate from unknown transmission chains, with mortality often occurring outside of health facilities. Among the casualties are 121 frontline health workers in Ituri, 36 of whom have died. Factors such as regional insecurity, artisanal mining, and cross-border movement with Uganda and South Sudan continue to hinder containment efforts. WHO models suggest the actual number of cases could be two to four times higher than the official tally. Joint technical assessments with Uganda are underway to improve surveillance in border areas like Kasenyi.
