Death of Cypriot lawyer and former politician Nikos Kleanthous

Nikos Kleanthous, a lawyer and founding member of the Democratic Party (DIKO), has died at the age of 78. Born on March 23, 1948, in Larnaca, he studied law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In 1977, he was appointed by the Council of Ministers to the investigation committee concerning the 1974 coup. His political career included three terms as a Member of Parliament for Larnaca, serving from 1996 to 2011. Within DIKO, he held several leadership positions, including Deputy President from 1998 to 2006. In 2006, he unsuccessfully contested the party presidency against Marios Karoyian, and in 2011, he ran for Mayor of Larnaca but was not elected. Beyond politics, he served on the Larnaca School Board, the Cyprus Football Association judicial committee, and the Larnaca General Hospital Patient Welfare Council. The exact date of his death is reported as July 21.
