Turkey inaugurates maritime traffic surveillance system in northern Cyprus

Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu, accompanied by local official Erhan Arikli, inaugurated a new Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system in the occupied city of Famagusta. The project, developed by the Turkish company Havelsan in coordination with the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, aims to monitor maritime traffic in the Eastern Mediterranean. New unmanned surveillance stations linked to the central control hub have been installed in Rizokarpaso, Agios Theodoros, and Livera. According to Turkish officials, the system uses domestic technology to enhance navigation safety and asserts Turkey's presence in the region. The inauguration coincided with the anniversary of the 1974 Turkish military intervention. Turkish officials stated that the system is intended to consolidate the nation's sovereignty under the 'Blue Homeland' doctrine. Conversely, local officials in the occupied territories characterized the launch as a response to those attempting to exclude Turkey from regional maritime affairs.
