Authorities clear illegally occupied beaches in Larnaca

Larnaca authorities launched large-scale sweep operations on July 21 and July 23, 2026, to remove illegal caravans and makeshift structures from the coastline. The interventions followed reports of public beaches near the Larnaca Nautical Club and the former oil refinery site being turned into private areas, effectively blocking public access. The operations were initiated after Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou issued an ultimatum to the occupants, following significant public outcry regarding hygiene and the illegal use of public space.

At the Larnaca Nautical Club site, approximately 18 caravans were recorded on July 18. While 12 owners complied with the warning and removed their vehicles voluntarily, authorities confiscated the remaining six. On July 23, a second operation at the former oil refinery area resulted in the removal of three more caravans and the demolition of nine unauthorized shacks. One structure was found to contain hazardous asbestos, requiring specialized removal teams in protective gear. Large boulders were placed at beach entrances to prevent further illegal access. Owners of the removed property will face administrative fines and must pay associated costs before reclaiming their assets.
