British government to scrap digital ID scheme to fund electricity tax cuts

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a government plan to remove value-added tax (VAT) on domestic electricity bills, effective October 1. The initiative aims to address the ongoing cost-of-living crisis facing many British families. Funding for this tax relief, estimated for the current financial year, will be sourced from the cancellation of a proposed national digital ID programme. The government-backed digital ID scheme, which aimed to require all employees to carry digital identity documents to combat illegal migration, was previously labeled a "fiasco" by a cross-party parliamentary committee. The cancelled project had an estimated budget of £1.8 billion ($2.42 billion). Burnham stated that the decision reflects his commitment to improving living standards and addressing long-standing stagnation in the country. He emphasized that the government must prioritize the needs of citizens over bureaucratic projects that have failed to produce effective results.
