Appeals against sexual abuse convictions rejected by courts

Appellate courts have recently rejected two separate appeals from men convicted of child sexual abuse. In the first case, the Limassol Criminal Court’s conviction of a man for abuse occurring between 1996 and 2003 was upheld, with the court citing methodical and discreet actions to justify the credibility of the complainant's testimony. The defendant had challenged the reliability of the victim and the police investigation, claiming the acts could not have occurred in a classroom without detection. In a second distinct case, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction of a man by the Larnaca Criminal Court for abusing his underage stepdaughter between 2014 and 2021. This defendant was also convicted of obstructing judicial proceedings by attempting to prevent the reporting of the incidents. The Supreme Court confirmed that the lower court had conducted a thorough evaluation of the evidence and correctly rejected the defendant's claims of excessive sentencing and insufficient proof. In the second case, the cumulative prison sentences reached up to nine years, while the first defendant faced sentences ranging from eight months to three years. Both appellate decisions affirm that the original court rulings were legally sound and based on credible evidence.
