Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides, the world number one in the ILCA 7 category, has secured the top position in the overall standings entering the final medal races at the Los Angeles Grand Slam in San Pedro. The competition, which began on July 19, saw Kontides overcome a 27th-place finish in his opening race—which was discarded from his total—to dominate the subsequent qualifiers and Golden Fleet finals. By the conclusion of the 12th race, where he finished 4th following a 6th place in the 11th, he successfully maintained his lead ahead of Australian Matt Wearn and British sailor Michael Beckett.

This event serves as crucial preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Kontides, a two-time Olympic silver medalist and current European champion, previously competed in the North American Championship earlier in July, placing 10th. Meanwhile, in the ILCA 6 class, Cypriot sailor Marilena Makri concluded her participation in the tournament in 25th place overall. The regatta concludes following two final medal races where the top ten athletes from each category will compete to decide the final podium rankings.
