Lebanese army deploys to southern regions following Israeli troop withdrawal

On Tuesday, the Lebanese army began deploying units to the towns of Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh, Froun, and Srifa in southern Lebanon. This move follows an agreement mediated by the United States, which involves the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces and the establishment of pilot security zones. The initiative aims to restore Lebanese government control over a 10-kilometer-deep strip of land, where heavy fighting since early March has razed dozens of villages and destroyed public infrastructure. While the US State Department and the Israeli military confirmed the start of these operations, Israel stated it would remain in the broader security zone until threats are addressed. The objective of the plan is to disarm Hezbollah and remove its illegal weaponry from the region. The Lebanese military has advised residents to remain cautious until security in the areas stabilizes. Meanwhile, discussions regarding the broader regional situation were reported to be held between US President Donald Trump and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Washington.
