Cyprus launches new national quality certification mark for agricultural products

The Cypriot Ministry of Agriculture has introduced a new National Quality Certification Mark for agricultural and livestock products. Presented on Tuesday in Nicosia by Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou, the initiative aims to increase the competitiveness and added value of local goods. The system utilizes QR codes on product packaging to provide consumers with transparent information regarding origin, production processes, and quality standards. According to some reports, the scheme may also include a star-based rating system, although official documentation focuses primarily on the QR code feature. This program is part of the broader Strategy for the Development of the Primary Sector, fulfilling commitments in President Nikos Christodoulides' governance agenda. The minister noted that because Cyprus cannot compete with large markets on volume, it must focus on quality, safety, and innovation. The launch event was attended by representatives from agricultural organizations, academic institutions, and government bodies. The system is designed to foster consumer trust and assist local producers in both domestic and international markets through modernization incentives.
