Evzones maintain post at Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during heatwave

Athens is experiencing a severe heatwave with temperatures expected to reach between 42°C and 43°C. Despite these extreme weather conditions, the Evzones of the Presidential Guard continue their ceremonial duties at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square. The soldiers remain at their posts wearing their traditional uniforms, which include heavy fabric and footwear. To manage the high temperatures, an officer on duty monitors the soldiers' health regularly. This officer provides them with water to ensure hydration and wipes sweat from their faces during their shifts. While the urban environment of central Athens intensifies the heat through the heat-retaining properties of concrete and asphalt, the guards maintain their disciplined stance.
