Customs agents warn of industrial action over automated import system failures

The Association of Customs Brokers in Cyprus has reported ongoing technical issues with the Automated Import System (AIS), which replaced the 'Theseas' system on September 29, 2025. Ten months after its implementation, the association describes the platform as an electronic labyrinth characterized by frequent downtime, system crashes, and overly complex procedures. Association president Christos Akaros, speaking at a press conference in Limassol, stated that these complications have tripled customs clearance times. The brokers argue that the system remains operationally unstable, necessitating repetitive data entry and lacking sufficient automation. These inefficiencies have disrupted the entire supply chain. The association has set a deadline of September 29, 2026, for the authorities to provide a credible plan for resolving these issues. If the deadline is not met, the board will seek authorization from the General Assembly to pursue legal and industrial action. Prior to the launch, customs brokers had engaged in a multi-day strike starting on September 24, 2025, over concerns regarding the system's readiness.
