Cyprus is currently experiencing a critical period of elevated wildfire risk, driven by a combination of extreme temperatures, low humidity below 20%, and strong winds. National Civil Protection Coordinator and Fire Chief Nikos Longinos stated that conditions have made this week one of the most difficult of the fire season, with over 1,350 countryside fires recorded since the start of 2026. The Forest Department has maintained a 'red alert' to warn the public of the heightened danger of forest fire ignition and spread.

In response to these conditions, the Fire Service has implemented preventive measures, including the 'Astrapē' (Lightning) operational readiness plan in the Limassol district, where over 96% of personnel responded to a call-up. Despite several localized incidents, including a brush fire near the Kofinou-Limassol road and a residential garage fire in Nikoklia, authorities have successfully contained outbreaks in their early stages. A small forest fire in Agios Epiphanios Soleas was also suppressed on Friday evening by Forestry Department crews.

Looking ahead, authorities remain on high alert through the end of July. While a slight temperature drop is expected over the weekend, officials anticipate rising heat levels next week and continue to monitor meteorological conditions closely to ensure rapid deployment of ground and aerial firefighting resources.
