Prominent criminal lawyer murdered in Athens
The 73-year-old criminal lawyer Stavros Georgiou was found dead in his office on 3rd September Street in central Athens on the night of July 21, 2026. His body, which showed signs of severe physical trauma, was discovered by his 16-year-old twin daughters who had grown concerned after being unable to reach him by phone for several hours. The victim was found in a semi-nude state, and the scene indicated he had been subjected to a violent struggle.
Police authorities, specifically the Department for the Prevention of Organized Crime, launched an immediate investigation utilizing security camera footage, fingerprints, and DNA analysis. These efforts led to the arrest of a 28-year-old Egyptian national. According to police reports and the suspect's confession, the two had met through a mutual acquaintance and went to the office, where an altercation occurred. The suspect admitted to striking the lawyer repeatedly against furniture and walls before stealing money and a laptop. Beyond the murder, it was reported that an arrest warrant for the suspect already existed regarding a prior case of abuse against a minor.
