Colombia president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella announces shift in security policy

Colombia's president-elect, 47-year-old businessman and lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella, announced the opening of a 'Shield of the Americas' office in Medellín. This initiative is a U.S.-backed alliance, led by President Donald Trump, aimed at combating drug trafficking. The office is set to operate despite Colombia previously being excluded from the 16-nation alliance in March, which currently includes Argentina, Ecuador, and El Salvador. De la Espriella characterized Medellín as a central hub for organized crime and vowed to intensify military and police operations against rebel groups and drug cartels. This policy shift follows the conclusion of outgoing social-democratic President Gustavo Petro's term, whose attempts at peace negotiations with armed groups failed to curb rising violence. Colombia currently maintains its status as the world's largest producer of cocaine. Other significant nations in the region, such as Mexico and Brazil, remain outside of the alliance.
