Turkey has issued a maritime alert (NAVTEX) effective until August 30 for seismic surveys in the Eastern Mediterranean. The operation, conducted by the vessel Oruc Reis, is intended to map the route for a 101-kilometer natural gas pipeline connecting Anamur, Turkey, to an area east of Kyrenia in the occupied part of Cyprus. This project follows a memorandum of understanding signed on July 10 between Turkey and the self-proclaimed "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

According to Turkish officials, including Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, the pipeline will consist of 97 kilometers of underwater piping and 4 kilometers on land. The dual-flow system is initially intended to replace liquid fuels used for power generation in the occupied territories with natural gas. However, Ankara has explicitly stated its ambition to use the infrastructure as an "energy bridge" to transport gas from the Eastern Mediterranean to European markets.

This development has revived concerns regarding regional maritime tensions, similar to the 2020 disputes between Turkey and Greece. While Turkish media frames the project as a move to secure energy independence for the region, international observers note the potential for heightened geopolitical friction regarding maritime jurisdictions and the long-term strategic control of Mediterranean energy corridors.
