Cyprus Workers’ Confederation seeks reform of third-country labor employment strategy

The Cyprus Workers’ Confederation (SEK) has formally requested a comprehensive review of the national strategy regarding the employment of third-country nationals. During a recent meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides, union representatives advocated for more rigorous vetting of work permit applications to ensure they align with genuine labor market needs. The union cites official Department of Employment data showing that 24% of previously approved work permits remain unused. SEK proposes the reinstatement of Technical Advisory Committees to oversee the process, provided that existing collective labor agreements are strictly enforced. The organization argues that the current system fosters exploitative working conditions and unfair competition. They further propose that public contracts should be legally tied to compliance with collective agreements to improve labor standards. SEK emphasized that documented cases of worker exploitation and substandard living conditions persist, necessitating immediate intervention. The union intends to escalate these demands through the formal social dialogue process.
