Cabinet approves 1.65 million euro support plan for pig farmers

On Wednesday, the Council of Ministers approved a financial support plan totaling 1.65 million euros for pig farmers impacted by foot-and-mouth disease. Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, stated that the funds are intended to compensate for the destruction of piglets. The compensation is calculated based on the number of sows in each farming unit, with a maximum grant of 50 euros per destroyed piglet. The total financial aid provided to an individual farmer under this scheme cannot exceed 250,000 euros. The plan was developed in consultation with the Pig Farmers' Association. This decision finalizes the implementation details of a measure that was originally part of a broader support package approved on March 16, 2026.
