Greek communist party questions defense minister over alleged hate speech in ELDYK

Members of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Nikos Papanastasis, Vasilis Metaxas, and Thanasis Pafilis have submitted a formal parliamentary inquiry to the Greek Minister of National Defense. The inquiry concerns allegations of nationalist, racist, and irredentist slogans being recited within the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion of the Hellenic Force in Cyprus (ELDYK). This intervention is based on a letter from an active-duty soldier within the unit. KKE members claim that military leadership is aware of these activities and argue that such behavior is orchestrated by far-right and fascist elements. The party further asserts that there is institutional tolerance for these incidents, which they argue negatively influence the consciousness of conscripts. Additionally, the deputies allege that disciplinary measures are sometimes taken against soldiers who oppose Greek involvement in international military operations. The parliamentary group is demanding that the government clarifies what specific measures it intends to implement to prevent the recurrence of such phenomena. This is not the first time the party has raised similar concerns through parliamentary channels.
