On July 24, 2026, residents, local officials, and various organizations gathered on Ayios Athanasios Avenue in Limassol to protest the Cabinet’s decision to grant a planning dispensation for a €95 million shopping mall. The demonstration, organized by the newly formed 'Initiative for Limassol' (also referred to as 'Alliance for Limassol'), took place near the local Jumbo store to voice opposition against the project.

The proposed development, backed by companies including CAC Papantoniou Ltd and Swillmatch Ventures Ltd, is planned to cover 28,434 square metres, featuring 90 shops, restaurants, and a cinema. Protestors, including local mayors and party representatives, argue that the project was approved without adequate urban planning, proper traffic impact studies, or consultation with the local community. They contend that the site, situated near the Ayios Athanasios, Mesa Geitonia, and Agia Phyla areas, is already suffering from severe traffic congestion.

Demonstrators have issued a resolution to the Cabinet and the Council for the Study of Variations, demanding the immediate rejection of the permit applications. The movement, which cites the decision as the 'last straw' for the city’s quality of life, vows to continue its efforts to challenge the development, emphasizing the need for sustainable urban growth rather than project-specific dispensations.
