Residents and activists in Limassol are organizing a protest on Friday, July 24, at 6:00 PM, on Ayios Athanasios Avenue. The demonstration, spearheaded by the “Alliance for Limassol” and supported by the ALMA movement, aims to challenge the cabinet’s recent decision to grant a planning dispensation for a €95 million shopping mall in the Ayios Athanasios area.

The project, backed by major companies including CAC Papantoniou Ltd, Swillmatch Ventures Ltd, and groups associated with Nicosia Mall and Jumbo Trading Ltd, comprises approximately 28,434 square meters of space, featuring 90 shops, restaurants, and a cinema. Opponents, including local authorities and various professional bodies like ETEK, argue that the development was approved without proper urban planning or adequate traffic impact assessments, potentially exacerbating the city's existing congestion problems and damaging the viability of local small businesses.

While the government maintains its position in favor of the investment, the newly formed “Initiative for Limassol” platform is demanding a more sustainable urban development model. Citizens are calling for immediate institutional and legal responses to prevent the project from further degrading the quality of life and environmental standards in the region.
