Hitler's birth house in Braunau am Inn converted into police station

The building in Braunau am Inn, Austria, where Adolf Hitler was born in 1889, has officially begun operations as a local police station. The Austrian government acquired the property through a compulsory purchase in 2017 after years of debate regarding its potential use as a neo-Nazi pilgrimage site. Previously, the building housed a charity for disabled people and had served as an art museum under the Nazi regime. Austrian authorities noted that Hitler lived in the house for only a few weeks following his birth. The renovation, announced in 2019, aims to strip the building of its association with the Nazi leader. A memorial stone from the Mauthausen concentration camp remains on the sidewalk, bearing the inscription 'Never again fascism'. The facade of the building now bears only a sign reading 'Police'. Local officials reported that incidents involving visitors are now isolated, and the display of Nazi symbols remains strictly prohibited in Austria.
