Tourism sector faces low occupancy in northern Cyprus

The tourism sector in the northern part of Cyprus is experiencing a difficult summer season with occupancy rates significantly below expectations. Suleiman Kansu, general manager of the Salamis Bay Conti Resort & Spa, reported that large hotels are seeing occupancy no higher than 70%, while smaller establishments are operating at approximately 30% or have remained closed due to insufficient bookings. To stimulate demand, operators have reduced prices, offered complimentary transfers and meals, and lowered the minimum stay requirement from three nights to one or two. Despite these incentives, visitor numbers have not increased significantly. Reports highlight that many Russian tourists are avoiding the region due to legal and financial concerns. Key issues cited include the illegality of entry through the Ercan (Tymbou) airport according to the Republic of Cyprus, the lack of coverage for international health insurance, and regional instability in the Middle East.
