Investigation launched following sewage discharge allegations in Limassol

Community leaders and residents of Moni and Monagroulli in Limassol have presented video evidence, recorded by divers in mid-July, showing liquid discharge from a pipeline near a sewage treatment plant into the sea. Independent laboratory tests conducted by the communities reportedly identified the presence of coliform bacteria and enterococci in water samples taken from the site. The pipeline, managed by the Water Development Department and the local self-government organization, is intended for emergency use only during winter months. Authorities have previously denied that sewage was being released into the area. Following the media report by Omega Channel, the Minister of Agriculture, Panagiota Panayiotou, ordered an urgent investigation into the matter. The Department of Environment has been tasked with inspecting the site and taking new water samples to assess the environmental impact. The communities maintain that this is a recurring issue and continue to demand transparent explanations from the authorities.
