The Political Bureau of the EDEK party in Cyprus has officially scheduled an internal election for September 5, 2026, to select an interim president. This decision follows the recent resignation of party leader Nikos Anastasiou. According to the party's statutes, an interim election must be held within forty days of a presidential vacancy, and the individual elected will serve until the party's Electoral Congress, which is set for December 13, 2026. A Statutory Congress is also scheduled for October 11.

Prospective candidates are required to submit their nominations on August 4 and 5 between 10:00 and 12:00. Morphakis Solomonidis, who is currently serving as the acting president following Anastasiou’s departure, has indicated he will not run for the permanent position. The Political Bureau has authorized Solomonidis to convene the Central Committee to formally ratify these procedural decisions. The party is currently managing internal tensions, with reports describing a divide between the official party administration and a group known as the Initiative for the Reconstruction of EDEK. The process is intended to restore formal leadership stability through democratic and transparent measures as mandated by the party constitution.
