EDEK party to hold interim presidential election on September 5
The EDEK party in Cyprus has announced that it will hold internal elections on September 5, 2026, to appoint an interim president. This decision was reached during a meeting of the party's Political Bureau held on July 22, following the resignation of the former president, Nikos Anastasiou. The interim leader will serve until the party's Electoral Congress scheduled for December 13.
Candidates interested in the position must submit their nominations on August 4 and 5 between 10:00 and 12:00. The Political Bureau has authorized deputy president Morfakis Solomonidis to convene the Central Committee to ratify these election plans. Morfakis Solomonidis, who is currently serving in an acting capacity, has reportedly stated that he does not intend to contest the leadership position himself.
These organizational changes come ahead of a broader internal schedule, which includes a Constitutional Congress set to take place on October 11. The upcoming September vote serves as a transition measure to maintain party stability until the full electoral process concludes at the end of the year.
