Severe storms and flooding strike Chile causing fatalities

Since July 15, 2026, Chile has been battered by severe storms characterized by heavy rainfall, storm surges, and powerful winds. The Chilean government and the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED) have confirmed that at least ten people have lost their lives, while four individuals remain missing. Additionally, seventeen people have been reported injured.

The extreme weather conditions have caused widespread chaos, triggering flash floods and landslides that damaged significant portions of the country's infrastructure. Local reports indicate that dams have been overwhelmed and rivers have overflowed, leaving over 99,000 people isolated in various regions. According to the government, over 2,400 individuals have suffered direct property damage, while local authorities noted that major road networks have been severely compromised by debris and large rocks. The Coquimbo region and the Huasco province have been placed under a state of emergency to manage the crisis.

While authorities continue to assess the scope of the damage, emergency services remain deployed to reach those cut off by the floodwaters. The meteorological bureau continues to monitor the impact across affected provinces as recovery efforts begin in the aftermath of the storm.
