France recorded 5,764 excess deaths between June 17 and July 2, 2026, marking the highest mortality spike since the country's historic 2003 heatwave. According to the health agency Santé publique France (SpF), approximately two-thirds of the deceased were elderly. However, the data revealed an unprecedented rise in mortality across all age groups starting from 15 years old, with a notable increase observed in individuals aged 45 and older.

The most critical period occurred within a three-day window from June 25 to June 27, during which half of the total excess deaths were registered. While experts acknowledge the extreme temperature conditions, they have not yet definitively attributed all deaths solely to the heat, labeling the widespread increase in mortality from various causes as an unprecedented phenomenon.

This spike in mortality has ignited a sharp political debate within France. The opposition has accused the current government of failing to adequately prepare for the intensifying consequences of climate change. While the government has attempted to downplay comparisons to the 2003 disaster, which claimed 15,000 lives, the rising death toll has placed significant pressure on officials regarding their environmental and public health strategies.
