Friends of the Earth Cyprus launches Food Connect platform to combat food waste
On July 22, 2026, the environmental organization Friends of the Earth Cyprus launched a digital platform called Food Connect to address the country's severe food waste issue. The application, which is now available for download on Android and iPhone, acts as a bridge between food-related businesses and organizations or individuals in need. The initiative was developed under the EU-funded LIFE Food Connect project.
Participating businesses such as hotels, restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets, and producers can list safe-to-eat surplus food that would otherwise be discarded. Registered recipients receive notifications and can reserve these items for free collection. This platform aims to provide a practical solution for both environmental and economic concerns, as Eurostat data indicates that Cyprus records the highest rate of food waste in the European Union, with approximately 286 kilograms per person annually.
By facilitating the redistribution of surplus goods, the project seeks to mitigate the environmental impact associated with the production, transport, and disposal of food, while simultaneously supporting vulnerable social groups struggling with the rising cost of living.
