Cyprus is currently experiencing its first major heatwave of the summer, with inland temperatures climbing to 43C on Wednesday and forecasted to reach a new annual high of 44C on Thursday. The Department of Meteorology has issued an orange alert for extreme heat, effective daily between noon and 5pm, while also implementing a yellow warning for overnight temperatures that remained above 28C in the capital.

In response to the dangerous conditions, the Ministry of Labour has ordered the suspension of heavy and moderate outdoor work across the island. Tasoula Kyprianidou Leontidou of the Labour Inspection Department stated that for unavoidable tasks, employers must rotate staff and increase rest breaks. Furthermore, the Civil Defence has issued public safety guidance, urging vulnerable groups to exercise caution as authorities remain on high alert throughout the duration of the heatwave.
