Cyprus faces power grid instability due to heatwave and plant failures
On July 22, 2026, the Republic of Cyprus experienced rolling blackouts as the national energy grid struggled to meet record-breaking demand. The Transmission System Operator (TSO) reported that power outages occurred across the island between 18:52 and 20:22 to prevent a total system collapse. These disruptions affected all residential consumers, who were divided into 22 groups, with each group experiencing power cuts lasting between 18 and 30 minutes.
The energy crisis was triggered by simultaneous malfunctions at power plants in Dhekelia and Vasiliko, combined with a sharp decrease in solar energy generation after sunset. Consumption reached a record high of 1,332 MW on Wednesday. The situation is further exacerbated by an intense heatwave, which has driven air conditioning usage to unprecedented levels.
Authorities have warned that the grid remains under extreme pressure as demand is expected to reach up to 1,350 MW on Thursday, July 23. Residents have been urged to significantly reduce electricity consumption, particularly during the peak evening hours of 18:00 to 22:00. The TSO is utilizing all available power resources to avoid further widespread outages, though the risk of additional interruptions persists as temperatures are forecasted to hit 44 degrees Celsius.
