UN Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to visit Cyprus between July 27 and 29, 2026, marking the first visit by a UN head to the island since 2010. The visit has generated varied expectations among political leaders, with some viewing it as a strategic opportunity to restart negotiations, while others maintain a cautious stance regarding the likelihood of a comprehensive settlement.

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman stated that the visit is not a farewell tour and stressed he would not participate in negotiations solely for the sake of appearances. Instead, he prioritized confidence-building measures, such as opening new crossing points, regulating citizenship rights for children of mixed marriages, and enhancing sports cooperation. Conversely, some Turkish Cypriot leftist parties, including the Communal Democracy Party (TDP) and the New Cyprus Party (YKP), view the visit as a critical opening to resume the resolution process, with calls for public mobilization in support of a federal solution.

In the Republic of Cyprus, the General Secretary of AKEL expressed hope that the visit will lead to the resumption of negotiations from where they left off in 2017. He emphasized the necessity of safeguarding previous convergences and adhering to the UN Secretary-General’s framework to move the process forward.
