Cyprus faces critical electricity shortages and power supply instability
Cyprus is experiencing severe instability in its electricity supply, with the Transmission System Operator (TSM) reporting that current generation capacity is struggling to meet peak demand during recent heatwaves. The system is operating at its limit due to simultaneous technical failures in production units at the Vasilikos and Dhekelia power stations, resulting in warnings of potential power cuts and requests for citizens to restrict electricity usage.
Regulatory authorities (RAEK) have initiated procedures to activate a power mechanism under Article 34 of the Electricity Law, aimed at securing new generators by 2030 to replace the Dhekelia units scheduled for decommissioning. However, critics argue this timeline is dangerously delayed, noting that the country is already facing systemic shortages. Meanwhile, observers have highlighted that Turkey is moving to finalize underwater natural gas infrastructure by late 2026, with flow expected by 2028, further complicating the regional energy outlook.
Persistent concerns remain regarding the grid's inability to balance demand, as authorities have historically disconnected renewable sources during low-demand periods while facing supply gaps during peak times. The lack of adequate storage solutions and delays in infrastructure upgrades continue to exacerbate the vulnerability of the national energy grid.
