A severe heatwave in June has caused a significant economic impact in the United Kingdom, resulting in the loss of 24 million working hours. According to a study released by the London School of Economics (LSE) and the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), this reduction in labor output equates to an estimated economic loss of 1.35 billion euros for the nation.

The research, which analyzed data surrounding the week of June 22 and surveyed 1,950 adults across the UK, reveals that workers in physically demanding sectors such as construction and agriculture were disproportionately affected compared to those in less exposed roles like academia. On average, the recorded reduction in working time amounted to 0.47 hours per person. The findings highlight the vulnerability of labor markets to extreme temperature spikes, which occurred throughout June across many European regions, stretching from the Iberian Peninsula to Ukraine.

The study suggests that as climate conditions intensify, the economic pressure on national productivity will likely increase. Researchers emphasize that industries requiring high physical exertion are particularly susceptible, indicating a potential ongoing challenge for labor management and policy during future summer heat events.
