Cyprus Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michalis Damianou, announced on July 23, 2026, that the country’s power grid issues, specifically the current rolling blackouts, are expected to be resolved by the summer of 2027. The Minister attributed the solution to the integration of approximately 220 megawatts of new capacity into the system, with a significant portion consisting of battery energy storage systems.

Damianou explained that the current supply deficit occurs during evening hours when solar photovoltaic production drops to zero while electricity demand remains high due to air conditioning usage. To mitigate this, the Transmission System Operator aims to install 120 MW of battery storage before the summer of 2027, with additional private and state-run utility investments underway. The Minister emphasized that while natural gas remains a mandatory long-term strategic priority for Cyprus, with initial production from the Aphrodite gas field anticipated by late 2030, battery storage is the immediate answer to short-term grid instability. He noted that alternative plans, such as electrical interconnections with other countries, are not viable solutions for the immediate future as they require several years to implement.
