Cyprus experienced rolling power outages on Wednesday night following technical faults at Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) generators in Dhekelia and Vasiliko. Energy Minister Michalis Damianos stated that the outages, which caused significant public inconvenience, were the result of systemic issues that have accumulated over the past decade. On Thursday, Cyprus recorded an all-time high energy demand, exceeding 1,370 megawatts in the afternoon, although the Transmission System Operator reported that the system remained stable despite the high load.

To mitigate future supply issues, the government is prioritizing the installation of 120 megawatts of energy storage battery systems, expected to be operational by January 2027. Minister Damianos expressed confidence that these systems will prevent a repeat of this summer's problems. Furthermore, the administration continues to view the transition to natural gas as a necessary long-term objective, with the first extraction from the Aphrodite field projected for 2030 or 2031, following a Final Investment Decision expected by early 2027.
