Heavy rains and subsequent flooding across northeastern India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan have resulted in the deaths of at least 82 people this week. The extreme weather has caused widespread destruction to infrastructure, farmland, and public facilities throughout the region.

In the Indian state of Assam, the death toll has reached 36, with 10 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours. The disaster management authority stated that over 650,000 residents across 11 districts have been affected. Officials identified heavy rainfall in neighboring Nagaland between July 18 and 20 as the primary cause for the surging river levels. Meanwhile, authorities in Afghanistan’s Nuristan province and Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province reported 46 deaths and at least 100 injuries following heavy rainfall over the past 72 hours.

The region, particularly Assam, which is home to the Brahmaputra River, faces recurring monsoon-related damage annually. Local authorities describe the current impact as "unprecedented devastation," as rescue and disaster management operations continue to address the widespread impact of the flooding.
