Environmental groups and scientists have raised alarm over irreversible damage to the Albanian coastline caused by preparatory work for a major hotel complex envisioned by the Trump family. Marine biologist Olsi Nika, head of the NGO EcoAlbania, reported that construction activities between May 5 and May 30, 2026, have severely impacted the Narta Lagoon area. Satellite imagery confirms the construction of a bridge, the clearing of vegetation, and the creation of roads, which have damaged sand dunes and disrupted breeding grounds for the endangered Caretta caretta sea turtle and various bird species.

The investment project, valued at over four billion euros, has triggered protests in Tirana. The European Commission has expressed concern, reminding Albania of its environmental obligations regarding its EU accession path. Famous singer Dua Lipa has also publicly opposed the plans, citing the potential for massive biodiversity loss across thousands of acres. Critics argue that the interventions have significantly disturbed the ecological balance of the protected area, with experts suggesting the damage is largely irreversible.
