The Cyprus Department of Environment is expected to issue a final decision in early August regarding the proposed expansion of the Latsi port in the Chrysochou Bay. The project aims to add 186 new mooring spaces for recreational and fishing vessels up to 40 meters long, increasing the total capacity from the current 350 to approximately 536 vessels. Construction plans involve an intervention covering 90,000 square meters within the sea, including the addition of new breakwaters to protect the expanded basin.

Environmental organizations, including the 'Friends of Akamas', have strongly opposed the expansion, labeling it an invasive project that prioritizes private economic interests over the public good. Critics highlight that the area sits adjacent to four Natura 2000 protected zones, which house critical species such as the Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas sea turtles, the Monachus monachus monk seal, and the Tursiops truncatus dolphin, alongside essential Posidonia seagrass meadows. Opponents argue that the required Special Ecological Assessment fails to adequately evaluate the cumulative long-term impact on these sensitive marine habitats. The Department of Environment is currently reviewing the technical details before finalizing its position, which will determine whether the Cyprus Ports Authority can proceed with the official tender.
