The Cologne Zoo in western Germany has announced the birth of a southern pudu, one of the world's smallest deer species. The fawn, named Yenai, was born on May 15. Her mother is three-year-old Yadira, who was relocated to Cologne from the Rotterdam Zoo, and her father is four-year-old Alves, a deer born and raised at the Cologne facility.

Zoo biologist Lucy Hilius noted that while the northern pudu is slightly smaller, both species represent the smallest deer in the world. Despite their small stature, southern pudu populations are currently endangered. According to Hilius, human activity is the primary driver of this decline. Specifically, large-scale deforestation in their natural habitat and the presence of feral dogs—an issue also linked to human intervention—have significantly threatened their ability to find food and shelter.

While the zoo continues to monitor Yenai's development, the birth highlights broader conservation efforts aimed at protecting this vulnerable species from further habitat destruction. The facility serves as a critical site for breeding programs that help maintain the population diversity of these rare animals under controlled conditions.
