On July 24, 2026, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades, met with the mayors of the greater Limassol area at the Agios Athanasios Cultural Centre to address the city’s severe traffic congestion. The government presented a comprehensive roadmap featuring short, medium, and long-term projects with a total projected budget of 493 million euros. Key infrastructure developments include the northern bypass, which is considered the highest priority for diverting traffic away from the urban center, along with the Limassol-Saittas motorway (80 million euros), the second Yermasogia-Ayios Athanasios road (24 million euros), and a new road connecting Ypsonas and Polemidia (60 million euros).

The plan also incorporates smart traffic management systems, such as the Urban Traffic Control (UTC) system, which aims to optimize traffic flow via smart signalization. While the tender for these smart systems has been delayed by legal appeals, authorities remain committed to implementing them alongside extensive asphalt resurfacing projects, currently valued at over 8 million euros for 2026. Officials aim to finalize the project list and cost assessments by October 2026 to ensure integration into the state budget, emphasizing that the city's traffic issues require a unified, strategic approach rather than fragmented interventions.
